One of Handel's magic operas. Magical in every sense of the word. The story of Alcina, the beautiful and malevolent sorceress, absolute ruler of an island where enchantment abounds, passionate but fickle, who turns her legions of cast off lovers into wild beasts, the less fortunate ones into stones. But she loses her superhuman powers when she herself falls truly in love and becomes simply a vulnerable woman in despair.
The successive stages of her own transformation are marked by one glorious aria after another. Certainly one of Handel's greatest, most beautiful, most moving operas, it even has a generous element of comedy.
