Don Jose catches a flower tossed by an hypnotically seductive but volatile gypsy girl named Carmen, and his fate is sealed. Despite its agonies and uncertainties, he surrenders to this all-compelling, all-consuming passion that will jeopardize his career and send him to prison. Abandoning all hope of self respect, including the girl he has long planned to marry, he joins Carmen's band of smugglers, only to be abandoned in turn when she seeks new excitement in the arms of a dashing bullfighter.
