Listen to Donald Pippin:

An acknowledged, awe-inspiring leader of a small nation occupied and oppressed by a rival nation vastly superior in wealth and power, Norma is also priestess of a rigorous cult that demands strict vows of celibacy. The last person one would suspect of leading a double life, in fact she has violated very conceivable code by falling in love with the leader of the occupying army. Exposure would mean certain death by fire on charges of treason. Worse yet, having risked all, she now learns that he is about to abandon her in favor of a younger, naive and innocent girl named Adalgisa, who returns his passion, but who also idolizes Norma as a mentor and spiritual guide.

When the truth comes out both women are horrified. Adalgisa instantly renounces all claim on the man, and after pleading with Norma not to give up in despair, even volunteers to intercede on her behalf, hoping to bring the unfaithful lover back to his senses. In a brief respite from the pain that is tearing them both apart, the two women rejoice in the power of friendship that at times can transcend even the power of love - a bond that will soon be put to the supreme test, and Norma's true greatness will be revealed.
